AMC doesn’t get the recognition it deserves when it comes to their muscle cars. Now granted, the Hornet wasn’t the best looking muscle car, especially compared to the conservative designs such as the one found on the Nova, but it did have a few tricks up its sleeve. For starters, it was extremely lightweight, and not just for a muscle car either. Weighing in at slightly over 3,000 pounds, it was a featherweight in its time, resulting in amazing handling characteristics. A SC/360 unit produced 285 horsepower, enough to propel the Hornet to 60 mph in under 7 seconds. It also ran 14s in the quarter mile. A great driving car, it’s just a shame the design let it down.
